Royal Geographic Society: Young Geographer of the Year (Copy)

2022 Essay Competition

Overview

Run by the Royal Geographical Society, the Young Geographer of the Year competition allows students aged 7–18 to showcase their geographical understanding and acknowledge the remarkable achievements of upcoming geographers.

The Society actively encourages schools to organise internal contests, from which the top 10 entries are submitted for the international competition. Having existed for over two decades, the Young Geographer competition drew participation from more than 10,000 young individuals in 2020.

The competition encourages insightful and imaginative responses to its annually designated theme. The 2025 theme is Understanding Islands, enabling exploration of their physical, cultural, and geopolitical challenges. Students submit creative posters or StoryMap entries.

Entries are judged across Key Stages 2–5, with winners and highly commended students selected from state and independent UK schools and internationally.

Deadline:

The Young Geographer of the Year competition 2025 is now open and closes on the 3rd of October.
