How to Enter the Essay Competitions
STEP 1
Register and pay £10
Register for each subject you want to enter. The fee pays for expert judging across 20+ subjects and keeps the competitions running every year. We will send registration details once the questions are released for 2026.
STEP 2
Research and write
Answer your subject's question within the word limit, using Harvard referencing. AI tools may help with background reading only; the writing must be yours.
STEP 3
Upload one PDF
Use your submission link, pick your subject from the list and upload your essay as a single PDF before 3 April, 23:59 UK time.
File checklist
Entries that don't follow these rules may not be marked.
01 PDF only. In Word or Google Docs: File › Download / Save as › PDF.
02 No name or school anywhere inside the essay, so judging stays anonymous.
03 Put the question and word count at the top of page 1.
04 Name the file EntrantID_Subject.pdf, e.g. MU27-0412_Law.pdf
05 Typed, not scanned: no photos or scans of pages.
06 Under 10 MB, one file per entry, bibliography at the end. Compress PDF using an online tool if needed.
How essays are judged
Every entry is marked against the same criteria. Essays are judged on:
Originality and depth of thought
Clarity and sophistication of written expression
Coherence and structure of argument
Evidence of wider reading and research
Awareness of real-world, ethical or interdisciplinary dimensions

How much does it cost to enter?

Each entry costs £10. You pay once per subject, so entering Law and History costs £20. Students eligible for our Access Scheme can enter free.
Who can enter the Minds Underground Essay Competitions?

Any student aged 8–18, anywhere in the world. Students aged 14 and under enter the Young Minds Prize; Senior prizes are aimed at Year 12 but open to younger students.
Yes. You can enter as many subjects as you like, with one essay per subject. Register and submit each entry separately.
Can I enter more than one subject?

After registering you receive an email with your Entrant ID and private submission link. Use it to choose your subject and upload your essay as one PDF named EntrantID_Subject.pdf.

How do I submit my essay?
PDF keeps your formatting exactly as you wrote it and lets us mark every entry the same way. Please don’t send Google Docs links or Word files; in either program, use File › Download or Save as › PDF.

Why PDF only?
How long should my essay be?
Each subject page gives its own word limit, typically 1,000–1,500 words. In-text references count towards the limit; the bibliography does not.

Which referencing style should I use?

Harvard referencing, with a bibliography at the end.
Only for background research or exploring ideas. The essay itself must be entirely your own writing; AI-generated phrasing, arguments or structure may lead to disqualification.

Can I use AI?
Can international students enter?

Yes. The competitions are open worldwide. Essays must be written in English.
When are results released?

Winners, runners-up and Highly Commended entrants are notified by email a few weeks after the deadline, and winning essays are published on our Results & Model Essays page. We receive a large number of emails around the submission deadline so please be patient and refrain from emailing to check on results.
How are Minds Underground and U2 Tuition related?
